Summit Review Group to Meet in Washington D.C.

July 18, 2008 - National Coordinators of the Summit Implementation Review Group (SIRG) of the Fifth Summit of the Americas will meet on Thursday July 24, 2008 at the headquarters of the Organization of American States (OAS) in Washington D.C.

The SIRG is the political body responsible for follow-up on Summit mandates, coordinating the Summit agenda, and preparing for future Summits.

National Coordinator for the Fifth Summit, Ambassador Luis Alberto Rodriguez, will present the Draft Declaration of Commitment of Port of Spain on the theme: "Securing our Citizens' Future by Promoting Human Prosperity, Energy Security and Environmental Sustainability."

The Meeting will also be addressed by OAS Secretary General, Dr Jose Miguel Insulza.

Ambassador Rodriguez expressed satisfaction that the technical work of the Summit is proceeding at "an impressive rate."

Welcome to the Fifth Summit of The Americas, Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago, April 17, 18, 19 2009

In 2009, Trinidad and Tobago will host the Fifth Summit of the Americas. 

The Summits of the Americas are held every three to four years and bring together the 34 democratically elected Heads of State and Government in the Western Hemisphere to exchange ideas and opinions on the political, economic, social, and security challenges confronting the region. 

From 1994, the Summits process has seen the implementation of several initiatives advancing improvements in healthcare, education, infrastructure and security, disaster mitigation and preparedness, environmental conservation, and democratic governance across the hemisphere - all for the benefit of the people of the Americas.

Confronting Social Development Challenges

"Democracy and economic and social development are interdependent and are mutually reinforcing," states the Inter-American Democratic Charter. It is a concept that has been gaining ground in recent years, a recognition that democracy resides not only in the voting booth, but in citizens' access to a life of dignity.

Overcoming poverty and hunger, eliminating inequality and discrimination, creating new opportunities for education and employment - these are just some of the challenges faced by the countries of the Americas. Last week the region's governments took an important step toward increasing dialogue and cooperation to address these deep-rooted problems when they convened for the First Meeting of Ministers and High Authorities of Social Development in the framework of the Summit of the Americas process.
