Port of Spain:
Music entrepreneur Ivan Berry told an inter-American youth gathering
today that his continued success in the entertainment business is
dependent on the industry’s protection of intellectual property.
The
artist manager, record label owner, talent development executive and
publisher made this point during his address on the final day of the
Youth Forum on the Caribbean Princess Cruise Ship in Trinidad and
Tobago’s capital. The forum - “Building an Alliance for 21st
Century Youth” - took place ahead of the Fifth Summit of the Americas,
which will be held here from April 17 to 19, 2009.
The
Chairman and CEO of IB Entertainment lamented what he referred to as
the “abuse” of entertainment protection laws by local pirates.
Mr.
Berry said it was incumbent upon the powers that be to realise that
intellectual piracy is increasing and people are not fully aware of its
impact on the creators within the entertainment industry.
He
noted that young people in the Caribbean have been significantly
influenced by the vibrant entertainment industry. However, he added
that in order for them to appreciate the industry, they need to be
educated about the practical aspects as well.
Mr.
Berry stated the recording industry has died while the music and
entertainment industry have exploded. Consequently, there are more
opportunities for youth today.
He
went on to urge governments to not only educate young people but
support and create opportunities for their entry into the international
entertainment market in order to export local culture.
Mr.
Berry was adamant that there is a market for local entertainment, and
the culture needs to be taken more seriously if it is to survive in
this digital era.
