The Essay Competition is organised by the Summits of the Americas Secretariat of the Organisation of American States (OAS) in coordination with the National Secretariat for the Fifth Summit of the Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.

It seeks to raise awareness among students about the themes of the Draft Declaration of Commitment of Port of Spain which is currently being negotiated by the 34 OAS Member States. Essays will analyse the principal areas of the theme:

• Human Prosperity
• Environmental Sustainability
• Energy Security
• Strengthening democratic governance and
• Strengthening the Summits process

Essays will be accepted in the four OAS official languages (English, Spanish, French or Portuguese). A qualified jury comprised of academics, high level specialists and experts of the member institutions of the Joint Summit working Group, will evaluate the essays and determine the winners.
