Security
officials at the National Secretariat for the Fifth Summit of the
Americas will conduct a “dry run” on Thursday April 9, 2009.
The exercise, which
takes place from 10:00am to 2:00pm will simulate the movement of Heads
of State and Government as well as support staff and media pools from
the Hyatt Regency Hotel to the Diplomatic Centre, St. Ann’s.
Gold Commander,
Assistant Commissioner of Police, Steve Waldron says “although the
intent is to minimise any disruption and inconvenience to the public
during the execution of the rehearsal, there will be a delay in the
regular flow of traffic”. He advises that the roads which will be used
during the exercise from the Hyatt to the Diplomatic Centre are
Wrightson Road; Colville Street; Cipriani Boulevard; Queen’s Park West
and St. Ann’s Road. On the return trip from the Diplomatic Centre to
the Hyatt, the convoy will travel along St. Ann’s Road; Queen’s Park
East; Cipriani Boulevard; Colville Street and Wrightson Road.
Commander Waldron
explains “that vehicles will be restricted during the passage of the
convoys along the route but once they have passed, the normal flow of
traffic will continue”.
He’s also requesting the
assistance of the public during the exercise, which will test the
operational plan for protocol, logistics and security during the Fifth
Summit of the Americas from April 17-19 in Port of Spain.
Commander Waldron says the “dry run” will also be used to identify gaps and issues and make recommendations for improvement.
